Homemade Chex Mix.
That’s what, “Scramble” is.
This is a Christmas Tradition from my family that goes back generations. I’ll just go ahead and warn you if you are on a strict “real food” diet – you’re gonna want to skip this one.
It is fake-food.
A food-like substance.
Horrible, evil processed stuff goes into this recipe.
BUT. If you are going to eat snack foods that are unhealthy you should eat this one.
It is addictive, salty, crunchy and perfect for snacking anytime. I love it.
I debated whether or not to post it, but since it’s a Christmas Tradition around here, I would be a liar if I tried to pretend like I never ever eat processed foods. Especially around Christmas-time. I did attempt to health-ify it with some organic oil. But it’s pretty much hopeless. It’s not good for me.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas if I didn’t wreak havoc on my digestive system, so let’s make some Scramble!
Old does not begin to describe this recipe. It came from my mother’s, dad’s mom. Also know as my Mom’s grandmother. Also known as my great-grandmother on my mother’s side. Are we all clear? I think I’m still confused. I’m equally confused about how these folks from the dark ages got their hands on boxed cereal. But, I’ll just go with it.
Speaking of dark-times. I’m sure that back then cereal was “real” food. At least, it was definitely more real than today. No one had figured out how to hydrogenate or partially hydrogenate oil. GMO’s wouldn’t exist for another century. And, sugar was sugar, not corn sugar or corn syrup. Ugh. So, it was probably fairly healthy when my great-grandmother made it. Not now.
You’re going to have to overlook my usage of non-food here and let’s just say it’s Christmas and we’re going for 80/20.
In order to make this “food-like substance” you will need:
- Corn Chex
- Rice Chex
- Real salt
- Celery salt
- Onion salt
- Garlic salt
- Mixed nuts (optional)
Pour all the cereal, pretzels and nuts into a giant roaster.
In a separate bowl combine oil,
and pour over cereal, pretzels & nuts.
Stir until evenly coated. Bake at 250 degrees for 2 hours. Stirring every once in a while.
After 2 hours it will be evenly toasted, crispy and lightly browned.
Transfer into a festive Christmas dish and set out for guests to enjoy! Crunchy, salty, delicious. Christmas is not Christmas without scramble.
